A Brief History of St. Mark's Episcopal Church

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 



The First Church Building
~ 1874 ~
St.Mark's Episcopal Church, San Marcos, was established. Initially, services were held in the Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Wallace Carnahan presiding. Later that year, the parish moved into a frame building of its own.

~ 1902 ~
Work on the parish's new building was begun. This brick structure , located on Hopkins Street, was completed in 1904.

 ~ 1940 ~
Following major repairs, the church was re-dedicated, with the Rt. Rev. William Capers officiating. Because of severe damage to the foundation, this would be the last time repairs would be made.
~ 1951 ~
The parish purchased the old East End School property from the City.
 ~ 1954 ~
Encouraged by Bishop Everett Jones, the parish built a parish hall on this property and used it as a sanctuary for several years.
~1966~
Construction began on St. Mark's fourth Sanctuary, which would adjoin the parish hall already in existence. It was completed and dedicated in December of 1966 under the rectorship of the Rev. Gene Jennings
